At Moss Home, workmanship begins with the way a piece is made for you. We build upholstered furniture to order in our Los Angeles factory, combining carefully chosen materials with hands-on construction and options for size, comfort, and finish. From the hardwood frame and hand-tied spring suspension to the cushion fill and final seam, each decision contributes to how a piece looks, feels, and lives in your home. Here is a closer look at what goes into a Moss Home piece.

Each piece is produced in our factory in Los Angeles, CA with durable materials that speak to our company's character. Details of our manufacturing process are as follows.

FRAMES

Our craftspeople assemble frames by hand in our Los Angeles factory using 1-inch alder hardwood with 4x4 frame-grade centers. Industrial-grade screws and staples secure the frame components. Because each piece is made to order, we can review requested changes to a collection design before construction begins.

FRAME PREPARATION

Once the spring system is secured, we cover the frame with 1 inch of foam to prepare it for upholstery. Depending on the design, we may add a layer of blended polyester. Frames intended for slipcovers are covered with high-grade ivory muslin beneath the slipcover.

HAND-TIED SPRING SUSPENSION

Our suspension combines 9-gauge, no-sag sinuous steel springs with hand tying. After the springs are clipped and stapled to the frame, our craftspeople tie the spring system with Italian twine for strength, durability, and stability. This extra step is a defining part of our construction: steel spring support stabilized by hand. Tight-back styles use 11-gauge springs.

CUSHIONS

Our standard seat cushion pairs a 2-pound high-resiliency foam core with a zippered envelope of 10/90 white goose feather-and-down fill. The core provides support and shape, while the surrounding fill creates a softer, more relaxed feel. Standard back cushions combine a 90/10 white goose feather-and-down fill with microclusters. Some contemporary designs instead use foam-only cushions to preserve a more tailored silhouette. Other fill combinations and bench-seat options can be discussed when placing an order. Cushions naturally relax with use. Fluffing and turning them, and adjusting the fill when appropriate, helps maintain their appearance and comfort over time.

ZIPPERS

Our standard seat-cushion envelopes include zipper closures, allowing the fill to be adjusted as part of routine cushion care. We select zippers and hardware suited to upholstery use.

SEAMS

We overlock seams to secure fabric edges and support the durability of the upholstery. Careful finishing helps each piece retain its tailored appearance.

WELTS AND EDGE DETAILS

Our standard welt gives cushions a defined edge. For a different look, ask about contrasting welt in an available in-house or customer-supplied fabric. Other edge treatments include knife edge, flat flange, and topstitching. Options and pricing depend on the design and fabric; pattern matching may require an additional charge.
